My first custom installation of 2013. Thanks to Kathleen Ash of Studio K for all the tips and advice on using the proper glass adhesive. One aspect of the design I didn't fully appreciate until I photographed it was how the layout with the tile creates a bit of a glass box optical illusion which is evident in some of the shots. The vertical leg is set into the tile work.

Dr. Deskenstein is named that due to the number of walnut "stitches," or splines, it took to hold it together.  So I designed a steel base made from 2' x 2" angle steel so if it came to life and started to walk it would have that heavy clunking sound the monster had in the movie.  I wanted the village folk to scream if they saw it walking down the street.   

This is a custom design and fabrication for great customer of mine here in Austin. All the face veneers on the cabinetry were hand cut from one piece of walnut in my studio. There is a solid walnut blotter inset into the steel at the desk opening.

These projects were commissioned by Castleview Productions for their new office in central Austin. We designed these projects to meet their budget, and we built and delivered everything to meet their time frame. During the design phase, they gave us plenty of room to use our imaginations. To keep costs down, we specified stained maple, painted formaldehyde-free mdf, and ordinary steel. And we even used a salvaged stainless steel refrigerator door for the bar in the kitchen!

Betsy wanted a classic Early Texas Desk with all modern hardware and fittings.  Their home in the Avenues has tall ceilings and plenty of books. An extraordinary batch of walnut arrived on the day of my visit to the lumber yard.  A dream come true for all.
