Daruma Ramen
Signage - White Oak Table Centerpieces - Black Walnut, Resin
March 2013
I designed and made the functional centerpieces for the is new ramen house on West 6th last fall in 2012. The floral decoration inlayed with resin on the sides is taken from the wall paper of the interior and is a different color at each table. Not long after delivering the centerpieces, the owners of the establishment contacted me and asked me to collaborate with them on the sign. After starting with a concept based off tradtional japanese signage on live edge slabs, we ended up with a hand carved large wood block print design.

Solarium Desk with Credenza
My first custom installation of 2013. Thanks to Kathleen Ash of Studio K for all the tips and advice on using the proper glass adhesive. One aspect of the design I didn't fully appreciate until I photographed it was how the layout with the tile creates a bit of a glass box optical illusion which is evident in some of the shots. The vertical leg is set into the tile work.

Margo Sawyer Art Walls
plywood, MDF, enamel paint
dimensions 8'-0"w x 12'-5"h x 3'0"d, each wall
July 2012
The Art Walls are an installation by Margo Sawyer, designed in concert with architects Page Sutherland Page. The new house, located in Santa Fe, NM, features several other material innovations such as colored rammed earth walls.
Our role in the Art Walls was mostly technical. The joint vision of the artist and architect was paramount. From the outside surface, as draw by Margo, my job was 90% of the painted panels, and everything behind them. Margo provided the remaining 10% of the panels, metal with intense coloration.
Discussions started a year before implementation. At such an early stage in the process, I was able to plan effectively and to strategize the best possible outcome. The tolerences to the ceiling, fireplace, and ductwork were very precise. The panels facing the kitchen are operable cabinets. We fabricated in Austin, and installed in Santa Fe.

Media Center
Walnut Cabinetry with Eucalyptus Panel Work 2012. Though this piece looks minimal there is a great deal of complex functionality and flexibility worked into the design. All the case pieces are imbedded into and through the Eucaluptus panels providing chase ways to run wiring between all units and to the floating shelves which each have a removable hatch access behind them. The shelves themselves are hanging off a very rigid steel bracket design that is bolted to the studs behind the panel work. This began as a media center with more of a traditional cabinet design and in trying to showcase and best utilize the performance of the client's high fidelity equipment, the design kept getting stripped down and ended up as an acoustic niche with two floating walnut cases and two very solid floating shelves. There is lighting directly over the shelves from the bottom side of the upper cabinet. Thanks to GoAA member Hawkeye Glenn of Blacksmith for fabricating the heavy duty (hidden) bracket for the floating shelves.

Axis Chair/Bench
Cherry, Walnut, Danish Cord
July 2012
Originally commissioned by fellow Guild member Todd Campbell, this line will now be a production item.
The cherry for Campbell's original commission came from his family farm in Michigan, where it had been sitting in a barn for decades, awaiting it's destiny as Campbell's dining room seating. I have a strong affinity for Danish cording, so I immediately proposed it as a seating material. The second set was commissioned--along with a table--by Mockingbird Domestics, a new furniture store on South Lamar that supports local makers.
